The Future of ABA Dosage Planning Starts Here

POP-C™

A Research-Informed Tool for Determining ABA Treatment Dosage

Developed by experts at LittleStar ABA Therapy, the Patient Outcome Planning Calculator (POP-C) helps behavior analysts make more consistent, data-informed, and individualized ABA treatment dosage recommendations.

Built from peer-reviewed research and preliminary validation data, POP-C supports clinicians in synthesizing patient symptom severity, adaptive functioning, communication skills, behavioral concerns, and treatment needs into actionable dosage guidance.

Designed for BCBAs. Backed by research. Built for real-world clinical decision-making.

All proceeds from the POP-C will support our psychological service programs, including SibShops, social skills groups, and other essential services.

Why POP-C™?

Determining medically necessary ABA treatment dosage has historically relied heavily on clinical judgment alone. The POP-C was created to bring greater structure, consistency, and evidence-informed guidance to that process.

The tool was developed by clinicians and researchers at LittleStar to help practitioners:

  • Improve consistency in dosage recommendations
  • Support medical necessity determinations
  • Reduce variability among clinicians
  • Strengthen confidence for newer BCBAs
  • Align recommendations with patient-specific symptom severity and support needs
  • Support individualized treatment planning across the lifespan

Research-Informed. Clinically Grounded.

The POP-C™ was introduced in the peer-reviewed journal Behavior Analysis in Practice in the article:

Development and Preliminary Validation of the Patient Outcome Planning Calculator (POP-C™): A Tool for Determining Treatment Dosage in Applied Behavior Analysis

The research highlights several important findings:

  • 88% interrater reliability between POP-C™ recommendations and expert BCBA dosage recommendations
  • Significant correlations with commonly used assessments including:
    • Vineland-3
    • VB-MAPP
    • Essential for Living (EFL)
  • Designed to support individualized treatment recommendations rather than “one-size-fits-all” dosage models
  • Developed specifically to support evidence-based medical necessity decisions in ABA therapy

How POP-C™ Works

The POP-C™ guides clinicians through structured scoring domains related to:

  • Social communication
  • Social interaction
  • Restricted and repetitive behaviors
  • Adaptive functioning
  • Play and leisure skills
  • Challenging behavior
  • Sensory sensitivities
  • Safety concerns
  • School readiness
  • Comorbid conditions
  • Functional independence

The calculator then generates dosage guidance within three clinically informed intensity categories:

Low Intensity

Up to 20 hours/week, consultation, or social skills support

Medium Intensity

20–30 hours/week with family treatment guidance

High Intensity

30–40 hours/week with comprehensive direct treatment and family support

Built for Modern ABA Practice

The field of behavior analysis is growing rapidly, with many newly certified BCBAs entering practice each year. The POP-C was specifically developed to provide structured support for clinical decision-making while still allowing room for individualized professional judgment.

POP-C™ helps organizations:

  • Standardize intake and dosage planning
  • Support clinical training and mentorship
  • Improve documentation consistency
  • Strengthen insurance justification processes
  • Create scalable assessment workflows
  • Promote evidence-informed care
